How to Prevent the Summer Learning Loss

The NSLA reports that multiple studies have shown that students typically score lower on standardized tests at the end of summer vacation than they do on the same tests at the beginning of the summer. Furthermore, those studies report that most students lose on average about 2 months of grade level equivalency in mathematical skills alone, not to mention the other core academic subjects.

Follow eTutorsZone's tips below to reduce summer learning loss and help your student excel this summer:

1. Mobile Apps and Online Games

Educational mobile apps and online activities are a great way for your student to learn while they have fun this summer. Whether it’s during a car ride, after breakfast, or a replacement for video games, set aside at least 30 minutes each day for your child to dig into some educational fun!

We recommend downloading mobile apps that address the core academic areas (math, science, language arts, and social studies). Not sure where to start? Check out the list of top academic mobile apps: http://bit.ly/1aNzobZ

2. Go on family field trips

Whether it’s going to your local library or a museum, field trips are a great way to spend quality family time with an educational purpose. Libraries and museums aren’t all, either! Trips to the zoo, botanical gardens, farm tours, and cooking classes are a great way to get your child measuring, observing, and learning.

3. Get Social
Encouraging your child to socialize with other children in group activities is a great way for them to build communications skills and make new friends– it is summer, after all! Whether it’s joining a book club or signing up for an enrichment activity, your child will benefit on a personal and educational level from socializing.
